When Valley Lutheran Hospital administrators were faced with the difficult
task of relocating their fourth-floor Cardiac Rehabilitation Center and
all of its patients, they took advantage of the tremendous time savings
offered by Modular Technology's revolutionary construction methods. Completed
in only 67 days, this pristine hospital addition is handicapped-accessible
and houses a reception area, offices, and an exercise room.
In addition to the accelerated construction schedule, the building's design
and engineering both posed special challenges. Specifically, the modular
interior and exterior had to identically match the main building as well
as offer patients the same recuperative environment available to others.
Hence, identical materials, equipment and fixtures were used to create
an open and comfortable state-of-the-art facility. Floor-to-ceiling windows
enhance the contemporary design while ten-foot ceilings in the main areas
add to the light, spacious atmosphere. In fact, the smooth, three-coat
stucco exterior finish creates such a crisp, clean appearance that this
structure is indiscernible as a modular addition.
And it is within those smooth walls that true innovation resides. We are
proud to note that this is the first Type 1 non-combustible modular building
installed in the State of Arizona. This special type of construction requires
three-hour fire-rated columns and a two-hour fire-rated roof structure.
We accomplished this by using spray-on fireproofing and multi-layer drywall
construction. What's more, this facility was installed on a concrete slab-on-grade
foundation and features its own Class A fire alarm system with a fire
sprinkler system extended from the main building.
