Local School and Builder Recognized by Energy Department

Building with modular construction has gained a Phoenix school and local company national award-winning recognition.

When the Lela Alston School in Phoenix -- designed and built by Modular Technology Inc. -- won the “Governor’s Award for Most Energy Efficient Building” this year, they both got the attention of the US Dept of Energy (DOE).

The DOE was in the process of writing a National Best Practices Manual for Energy Smart Schools. They heard about the Lela Alston School and contacted Modular Technology for more information.

“We met and exceeded the federal guidelines before they were even published,” Modular Technology President Michael Morton said.

In fact, the Department of Energy was so impressed with the construction and energy efficiencies, they asked Modular Technology to build a demonstration model to be shown at the International Association of School Business Officials convention. The purpose of the exhibit was to help school business officials understand what constitutes an Energy Smart School. DOE will continue to use the model at other presentations. The 3,000 pound modular classroom section is 12 feet wide by 7 feet deep and 11 feet high. It demonstrated reflective roofing, double-pane low-energy windows, clerestory window with light shelf, T-5 electric lighting integrated with central daylighting, dual technology occupancy sensors, photoelectric cell control of lighting, formaldehyde-free batt insulation, and resilient linoleum flooring made with environmentally safe, biodegradable materials.
